Now I Understand the Mess!

Julie Sharpe

In a few weeks, people from Westbrook have an opportunity on Thursday February 27th to investigate Estate Planning by attending a free workshop.  I don’t know about you, but when Kevin was bugging me to attend this workshop last summer, I was less than excited. As a young adult, I had met with my grandfather’s attorney about my grandfather’s estate and the only thing I recalled afterwards was that he said fiduciary about fifty times! So, my previous experiences with estate planning and legal consults in this area were boring and made me feel stupid.  I didn’t really understand all the terminology and it wasn’t communicated in a way that motivated me to want to learn more.

However, I was pleasantly surprised while attending “The Mess” seminar to have my misgivings tromped on! The presenters were fantastic communicators and were well versed in explaining estate planning strategies in a way that made sense and were understandable.  There was no pressure or strong arming.  The event is free.  And it allowed Kevin and I to rethink what we were doing and why.  Even if you have some plans in place, this seminar might help you to look at your plans with fresh eyes.  I would encourage you to come at 6:00 pm to Westbrook and check it out.  If you decide you would like to move further ahead with estate planning, there is a $1,000 grant towards your legal fees of $4,000 if you decide to give any portion of your estate to charitable giving.  This grant comes from the Lily Foundation and is easy to access.  We did this and it was smooth and straightforward.  The event is sponsored by Generations Legal Services/Converge North Central/ Westbrook Church. They didn’t say fiduciary once!
