Jesus is my Superhero!

As we move into the end of the school year, and I listen to graduation speeches and watch kids that were once in my preschool classroom graduating, I find myself being a little more reflective. Thinking about the heroes and the shining “stars” that influenced me throughout the years.

When I think of heroes, I often think about those who work hard to protect and care of our community…fireman, law enforcement, doctors, nurses, teachers, and spiritual leaders.

However, as a kid many years ago I would have probably thought about the heroes in our comic books. My siblings and I would find a hiding place on our farm…the barn, the granary, tree branches, etc. and read our comic books with superheroes like Spiderman, Superman, Ironman, Batman, etc. imaging what it would be like to have superpowers like they possessed.

Today, those superheroes have come alive on the “big screen,” making them even more attractive to kids and adults as they use their powers to protect and rescue people from the “bad guys” or natural disasters. Think about it. What superpower would you choose?

The Bible is also full of heroes and “stars”. Brave men and women who lived by faith and did extraordinary things to lead, protect and care for their family and community.

This year’s theme for our VBS Mega Sports Camp is SUPERSTAR. We will be looking at a few of the heroes or “stars” from the Bible with the power to lead, protect, equip and save people through the power of God working through them for “with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26 NIV)

However, the greatest, most amazing, spectacular superhero of all time, came into the world with a humble beginning in a manager and would grow up to do incredible miracles, like heal the sick, change water to wine, walk on water, feed thousands with just two fish and five loaves of bread and raise people from the dead. He wasn’t a superhero that would pump His fist high like Mighty Mouse (aging myself a bit) shouting “Here I come to save the day!” But that is exacting what He came into the world to do! He saves the day! He saves people! He saves us…with the greatest power of all…LOVE! Jesus is that SUPERHERO! The greatest “STAR” of all time!

We invite all children K-5th to join us this summer at Westbrook for SUPERSTAR VBS. VBS runs from 6:00-8:00 pm, July 14-17th. Registration is now open! Kids are encouraged to invite friends and neighbors to join them for four “star” stunning evenings of fun activities, snacks, and relationship building as they discover more Jesus and His amazing love.

Also, this Sunday, May 18th between services and following the last service will be our Kids Spring Celebration. Children are one of our greatest resources, so we want to take the time to celebrate them and their accomplishments over the past year, and to let them know that they are deeply loved by their faith community. It will be a time for celebrating their joy, curiosity, and boundless energy with a bounce house/obstacle course.

This is a great opportunity for children and their families to make connections and celebrate the invaluable blessings that they bring to our church. Children are encouraged to invite their friends to join them for Kid’s Church and the fun festivities following the services.

Moving into summer we will continue to offer opportunities for our children to stay connected and grow in their faith. Kids Church will continue throughout the summer months on Sunday mornings (except May 25th & July 6th…we will have Family Worship, no Kids Church). We want to continue to grow and nurture the seeds of faith of our amazing kids all year long.

Now a shout out to the “superstars” at Westbrook. Sunday Kids Ministry and VBS doesn’t happen without the help of lots and lots of volunteers that give of their time to invest in the lives of God’s greatest gift…our children. Thank you so much for your commitment to planting and nurturing the seeds of faith in the hearts of the youngest member of our church.
