Drifting Off and Lifting Up: Thoughts on Prayer

I wanted to share some thoughts on prayer, falling asleep, and some random, and related, thoughts.

I try to make it a point to pray when I wake up and before falling asleep each day, using those times to thank God for the gift of another day – a blessing not everyone receives. Like many of you, my prayer list is extensive, including family, members of our congregation, friends, and even those I don't personally know.

However, I've noticed a pattern: I start with good intentions, but somewhere between praying for one group and the next, I tend to drift off to sleep. This leaves me wondering, does God see this as neglecting my "prayer responsibility"? Do those "missed" prayers go unanswered? No! (Like Paul, arguing with himself) I find comfort in believing that He knows my heart.

While I strive for more focused contemplative time, it often comes in short bursts throughout the day as I think of people and offer a quick prayer – one of my better habits, I suppose. It reminds me of calling someone "just because" – a simple "Hey, it's Joe, I have no reason to call, you just popped into my head."

On the topic of praying for others, I've found there's a unique vulnerability in asking, "May I pray for you?" after someone shares difficult news. Despite the risk of an awkward response, it's an offer worth making. Some might be taken aback, perhaps never having that offered before, while others readily accept the gesture with a pause, followed by a grateful, "I'd really like that."

I also recall my early days with the Worship Team's pre-service prayer gatherings. Initially, I'd be so impressed by others' eloquent prayers that I'd keep my thoughts to myself. But I soon realized that God isn't concerned with the eloquence of my prayers. He simply wants us to participate in whatever way feels natural to us. It's certainly not a prayer competition.

I really enjoy listening to others pray. I remember once telling Kevin after a particularly moving prayer, "Have you ever thought about a career in the ministry?"

Sometimes, I do offer a prayer during our pre-service time. It tends to be a bit rambling, covering various thoughts. Afterward, during the silence, I can't help but wonder if my fellow members are impressed by my "oratory skills" or thinking, "Clean-up on prayer aisle, Joe!"

Ultimately, I believe none of that matters. God understands that we are all doing our best, within our imperfect human nature.

It's this comfort and acceptance that I feel with Kevin and all of you Westbrookers.
