discipleship at westbrook

Gospel-centered discipleship is not about how we perform but who we are - imperfect people, clinging to a perfect Christ, being perfected by the Holy Spirit. (Dodson, J.K. 2022. Gospel Centered Discipleship. p17)

In the New Testament, a disciple refers to someone who is a follower of a particular teacher or leader. With Christ as Lord and the ultimate teacher and leader in our lives, that makes us all disciples! The great news: discipleship is already happening at Westbrook when we serve in ministry, give, pray for each other, worship together, meet for outreach events and in small groups. We believe putting additional emphasis on facilitating discipling relationships fits perfectly with the vision of Westbrook and provides additional opportunities for spiritual growth and deeper relationship with Christ for those newer to faith as well as those established in their faith.

What does discipleship look like at Westbrook?

1)    Relational (Mark 1:17): Either 1:1 or small group focus.  Recognizing the need to grow in our vertical relationship (us and God) as well as horizontal relationships (with each other).

2)    Intentional (2 Timothy 2:2) In discipleship we look to Jesus as our example and the ultimate source of wisdom. We envision spiritually mature individuals leading the discussions where mutual learning and growth can take place and practical Biblical truths are applied to daily life.

3)    Consistent (Titus 2:1-8) Consistency and clear expectations are important for forming trusted relationships. Meeting times can be flexible; content, form (in-person, video call), can be chosen and changed on agreement. Recommended guidelines would be meeting 2x per month for 60-90 minutes and review every few months to re-evaluate.

4)    Accountability for spiritual growth (Proverbs 27:17) As we are transformed by studying God’s word together, there is evidence of changes in heart, character, spiritual habits.  We emphasize the willingness to be vulnerable to share life experiences, struggles, as well as victories.

5)    Focused on multiplying (Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 6:7) One goal for those being discipled is to have the mindset to be learning in such a way that they can one day be ready to train the next individual.  This is how the gospel spreads and God’s kingdom grows.

Who are great candidates to participate?

1)    People newer to faith in Jesus, or people who have questions about certain aspects of the Christian faith and want to learn more in a guided way

2)    Established Christians who are motivated to grow as disciples themselves and willing to train and help others grow

We’ll be talking more about discipleship at the service next weekend- if you have questions or are ready to be involved - please connect with me!
