I don’t know about you, but when I was growing up, I was told by so many teachers, leaders, and adults who I assumed possessed the correct knowledge- that a person’s IQ- our innate level of intelligence- would determine our eventual success in life.
The high school Valedictorian, therefore, should always be the most successful person. Obviously, this did not always come true.
The prevailing viewpoint now of what determines a great deal of our success is our EQ- our emotional intelligence.
Self-awareness, the ability to understand one's own emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, is a foundational aspect of emotional intelligence. It involves recognizing one's strengths, weaknesses, values, and how these impact interactions with others. Developing self-awareness is crucial for building strong relationships, improving communication, and enhancing overall emotional intelligence.
Key aspects to be self-aware of in emotional intelligence:
Understanding emotions: Recognizing and understanding the emotions you are experiencing and how they influence your actions and interactions.
Recognizing strengths and weaknesses: Being aware of your capabilities and areas where you can improve.
Understanding values: Recognizing what is important to you and how your values guide your decisions and behaviors.
Impact on others: Understanding how your emotions and actions affect others.
Self-reflection: Taking time to analyze your experiences, emotions, and behaviors to gain deeper insights into yourself.
Self-regulation: Once you understand your emotions, you can learn to manage them more effectively.
Motivation: Understanding your own motivations and how they drive your actions.
