I had invited my friend to our Foundations class earlier this summer. And last week he texted me and said he would like to come to our Fundamentals Class this fall. And I laughed at his mistake, but then began to think he is really pretty accurate calling it our Fundamentals Class. We cover the fundamentals of what we believe as a church. We say that we want people to come as they are. You can belong here without believing all the right things or acting all the right ways. But we say that as you join us and make the move to be a part of our community, don’t stay as you are. God wants to grow us and develop us and make us into the best version of ourselves. That is the Becoming like Jesus part of our vision.
The Foundations Class will be six weeks and will cover the Alpha Curriculum and also focus on Westbrook’s vision and structure. The class will start with a meal, then we will have some live and video teaching. Then we end the evening in small groups discussing the content and addressing any questions people have. We love questions here at Westbrook. Not that we can answer every question definitively, but questions open us up to Jesus’ work in our lives. Questions are the key to figuring out what is behind the question and how God is working in our lives. There is real power in someone asking a question and the group chewing on it, discussing it and hearing from others. The Holy Spirit works in that kind of environment. I have seen it over and over.
We believe that this class lays out the fundamentals to our community, not only what we believe but also how we want to operate as a community of believers. This class will help us come together to build a caring community where all can belong, become and be a blessing. That is why we want everyone in our community to go through Foundations. This fall our Foundations class starts Tuesday night from 6-8 pm on September 17th. I would encourage you to sign up for this class, no matter where you are in your faith journey. And you can join us as we cover the fundamentals of our community!
