Encouragement

We all have spiritual gifts, both known and unknown. In Romans 12:7-8, Paul mentions teaching, leadership, and encouragement.

Let’s talk about En-Courage-ment.

The word Encouragement is defined as “the action of giving someone support, confidence, or hope.” I take a very literal definition: to give someone the Courage to try something new, keep “at it”, make a life change.

A personal story:

Although I’ve been playing guitar and singing since 1964, I became terrified (yes, terrified) when I saw that I was leading three songs on Good Friday. Sure, I’d secretly wanted to do that and hadn’t asked. Why? Because we already have quite a few excellent vocalists in our congregation. Also, the idea of not being able to “hide” behind my guitar, mic, and mic stand made me quite uncomfortable. Much less actually leading songs during the most solemn service of the year. What if I’m not up to it? What if my voice doesn’t hold up? What if I forget the lyrics or notes? And finally, what if I, by a mistake, break the solemnity of the service?

More than enough self-doubt to go around.

I shared my fears with Rob, Carey, Sara, and Megan, all singers whom I admire. Each of them suggested things for me to improve and how to accomplish them. I was the beneficiary of their encouragement, which made a HUGE difference.

Sure, I was nervous during the service, and I still need to improve my singing and stage presence. However, their encouragement got me to a place where I knew that everything would be alright.

I also benefited from what we in the Praise Band call, “Holy Spirit Moments”. Such as, when you can’t remember a lyric, note, chord and you “give it up” to the higher power. Somehow, we are given what we need in the moment - all you have to do is pray (quickly).

I’ve prayed many a prayer on the sanctuary stage!

What I’ve learned about Encouragement: it’s easy to give and can make a big difference in ways you cannot imagine.

So, if you know someone who is struggling, take the time to listen and understand their situation. Give them encouragement. You might never know how significant that can be.

Please, do not be afraid of finding the right words. Just being there in someone’s time of need will be enough. Follow up with them, too!

If, on the other hand, you need encouragement, seek out those who you trust and let them know how you are feeling, and what you are going through. I believe that you will find all of the encouragement you need.

Our congregation’s mission is to help others Belong, Become more like Christ, and be a Blessing to the world (and to each other).
