“The one thing”
The movies City Slickers and City Slickers ll were released in 1991 and 1994. Each movie centered around a quest. In the first movie, three friends set off on a cattle drive. These three friends were total “city boys” and had no knowledge of how to survive on a cattle drive. In the second movie, they returned to the “old west” again searching for lost gold described in a treasure map they had gotten on the cattle drive.
These movies are lighthearted comedies, but several mishaps occur to the City Slickers:
Difficulties with the cattle
Encounters with a rattlesnake
Billy Crystal - the star - “roped” his friends into going with him because he was unhappy with his life.
Difficulties with other members of the cattle drive
Jack Palance plays a role as a crusty old cowboy. In City Slickers he plays Curly and a similar role as Duke - Curly’s brother - in City Slickers ll.
Both characters, Curly and Duke, encourage Billy Crystal to discover the "one thing" that is most important to him in his life.
These are two, fun comedies. I will not say anything else about the movies. I would not spoil them for you. The similarities, though, to our lives are obvious.
We may be unhappy with the life we are leading.
We will face a variety of problems in life.
A bad medical diagnosis
A cruel divorce
Loss of a job and/or career setbacks
Disappointments with friends and family members
Untimely loss of a loved one
We are all searching for life’s treasure.
What can we do? We can take the advice Curly and Duke were urging Billy Crystal to take. Find “the one thing”. Discover what is the one thing that gives true meaning, purpose, and joy to life.
The “one thing” is to decide whether we believe the greatest claim and act in human history. Jesus claimed he was the Son of God and that He was brought back from the dead- resurrected on Easter morning.
John 1:14 “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Romans1:4 “was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Ephesians 2:4 “Because of His great love for us, God who is rich in mercy, made us alive in Christ”.
Romans 5:1 “We have been justified through faith; we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”.
Everyone has to answer:
Was the resurrection of Jesus real?
Can we be His child?
What point or impact does the resurrection have upon my life?
Do we have eternal life because Jesus was raised from the dead?
The answers we choose determine our world view, our entire value system, and how we conduct our lives. The quest to find the answer to “the one thing” is worth taking. The treasure is real. It is here for us at Easter season.
A second thing. Do you enjoy gardening? Do you want to be part of a worthwhile project? Westbrook Church will plant a garden on property for the second year. The harvest will be given to a local food shelf. Mark Danielson is heading up the team and effort. Please contact Mark at ifs-mark@att.net if you would like to be welcomed into the team. First meeting is April 22nd.
